Argentinian impressions

Here some first impressions of the 'chaos' in Argentina:

1) Why is driving the public bus difficult in Buenos Aires (especially for Germans)?
  • E.g., there is one line 57 (to my school), but this line 57 had 20 different routes, of which you can only use 2
  • There are no timetables - you just go to the stop and wait until the bus comes
  • There is no overview of the exact stops (not in the Internet, not outside nor inside the bus). For getting to school, I need 50 minutes by bus - after 40 minutes you just start asking the bus driver or the people around you when you arrive at a stop close to University de Austral.
  • Yet, I have to say it is a fantastic bus system - you get nearly everywhere in the city!!!
2) Why is it always wet on the pathways, even if it did not rain?
  • Because the housekeepers are cleaning away the dog's poo from the street every morning
3) Why is taking the subte in the morning or afternoon (rush hour) a bad idea?
  • You cannot enter the train, it is so crowded, there is no space at all - similar to the trains coming from the suburbs to Cologne at Karneval.
But, AMAAAAZING - wherever you are - people help you and take care that you get along. :-)

Lesson 1 for tourists: how to do a bus tour

Did you know how difficult it is to do a tourist bus tour across the city? No? I tell you, it took me two days to try, after that I surrendered...

1) Saturday 4pm: We are waiting for the yellow citybus to come, tickets can be bought on the bus (according to the homepage). Bus arrives 20 min later: They don't have any tickets, but we can buy them in the official shop 4 blocks from the stop.

2) Saturday 5:30pm: It was not 4 blocks, we walked for 1 hour to find the shop in a shopping mall. But: the shop was closed. So instead, Japanese garden and coffee, next day next try.

3) Sunday, 10.30am: We are more clever, now we have tickets printed from online. We arrive at the bus stop: First bus comes at 11.40pm. Ok, time for a coffee.

4) Sunday 12:00pm: We drove 4 stops with the bus, then it stops. We are supposed to wait 30 minutes, because in front of us is another bus waiting. So we (thought we) were clever, got off and tried to get on the other bus to continue earlier. Bis mistake!
a) there was a queue of 30 people, b) the guide didn't accept our online prints, and told us to change the tickets at the shop to 'real tickets', c) the lady in the shop put 2:40pm on our tickets, d) now the guide in the bus didn't accept us anymore, cause the tickets were only valid from 2.40pm onwards.
Bad luck, so we went by foot to explore the city. Good luck, we discovered a Brazilian festival with delicious food.

5) Sunday, 4:00pm: After exploring beautiful San Telmo, we finally caught the bus to go to La Boca. This area is one of the most  beautiful scenes, but very dangerous. This is the only reason I wanted to take this city bus, to make nice pictures from a save distance.

6) Sunday, 4:30pm: The bus turns left, and skips La Boca - it is Sunday, there is a soccer match, since it is too dangerous/ crowded to go. So I returned to my home and give up. Next time, I will walk to La Boca...

My first asado - BBQ

Hola chicos!
Argentina is famous for its meat! And I can only totally confirm this! It tastes delicious!!!

This is our first asado - at Luchito's house in the suburb of Buenos Aires. Amazing food, I have never had such a great meat. But watch out! No sauces with the meat - that spoils the flavour...
Mo (friend from Barcelona), Nacho (my first flatmate here) and Angie preparing the ap
The tall Lucho and the small Luchito (both from Luciano) - of course beer can't be missing, and you have a good look on the grill in the background
etizers before the asado

Lucho explaining me how you do a good asado - it seems like art! Step by step, everything done carefully...

Mo prentending he prepared the asado

The exchange students - Anthony alias ANTONIO ;-), me and Mo, and our first real asado

Asado is not a usual BBQ! No, you celebrate it with all your friends!

And Lucho's ugly dog! :-)

MBA school in Buenos Aires

What do I learn at IAE? Well, definitely how being creative.
Our team needed to present a case on Martin Churba - a fahion label. So why not presenting the contents within a fashion show? ;)

Mi equipo 4: Santi, Chavito, Gaby, Fran, Anita, Marisun, me and Manu - an awesome team! And I am looking forward to the asado this week with you! :)
UPDATE: What do we do if it is sunny outside and everyone is striving to get out of the dark buildings? Riiight we have our class outside. I just remember a situation in Barcelona when we asked our teacher to do the same. Answer: 'We are no language school at IESE, we are serious.' So here is the best example why it works though. By the way, the teacher was ranked best in South America for the last years.

Skiing in Las Lenas

We had a great time in Las Lenas - the high society skiing resort in Argentina (equivalent to St Moritz). After a 15hours ride on the bus over night, we had amazing three days to ski, and then return over night.
Only minor drawback: It was the last weekend of the saison, so not much snow left, rather 'Suppe', as you see on the pictures. Therefore skiing in t-shirts was no problem at all. :)
You know what is great about the Argentinian flexibility? After tough negotiations for the price and package, we took the decision two hours before the bus' departure and could directly go packing.

Look at the slopes! No snow!!!

Goodbye Party in Cologne

New country, new blog! :-)

Since 15 August of 2012 (woww, almost one month, can't believe it) I am in Buenos Aires. First impression: cloudy, rainy, cold, dangerous (a lot of robbers), coming from 30 degrees in Germany - what a bad deal!!! But I start really loving this country and the people here!

But step by step: First, Mom and Maike: Thanks for organizing as always a fantastic goodbye party! It was great to see you all and enjoy my last evening in Germany with you!
Que guapas!!! By the way, Astrid, Maike, everyone, I showed the pic to, told me you are looking beautiful!! :-)
